Travel Update – 7 Wonders Trip Probable in 7 Days #90909
Earlier today I met up with Kathryn, the very helpful world travel expert at Thomas Cook, Manchester and discussed the travel itinerary for 7 Wonders in 7 Days.
Alongside information about visas and vaccination, we discussed a couple of tweaks to the trip I’d like to share here.
As suggested by @Documentally (aka Christian Payne aka OurManInside), I’m now looking at moving the start date of the trip back by one day so that I am actually at the first of the 7 Wonders on 9th September 2009, moving on to the second destination on the same day.
Using the existing itinerary as a guide, it means that rather than flying to Italy’s Roman Colosseum on 9/09/09, I fly out from Manchester the day before, arriving in Rome well in time to see the Colosseum and make my way on to the next Wonder, Petra in Jordan, on the same day. This saves a whole day in the itinerary and takes me one giant step closer to completing the trip in 7 days.
Ideally, I’d spend up to a maximum of 6 hours in Italy so I can move on to the flight intensive leg of the journey: Amman, Jordan to Delhi, India and then Delhi, India to Beijing, China, as soon as possible.
Kathryn also thinks I might be able to save a day on the last leg of the trip, from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil en route to Chichen Itza, Mexico as Thomas Cook have found out that I can fly to the airport in Chichen Itza, rather landing first in Cancun which is 125 miles away.
Early next week, after the Bank Holiday, I’ll be posting a revised itinerary based on today’s meeting.
I’m also planning a design competition for a social media badge for the trip, more on this soon.
If you’re interested in which countries I need to get a visa for, here they are:
Jordan, China, India and Peru.
Vaccinations I need to cover are:
Tetanus, Typhoid, Polio, Hepatitis A, Diphtheria, Dengue fever and Yellow fever (if I am travelling through an infected area).
Travel medicines to sort out:
Anti-Malarials.
I also asked about an alternative trip, potentially covered by Star Alliance as suggested by @@technicalfault at the 7 Wonders in 7 Days launch at Futuresonic last week.
Kathryn replied that whilst feasible, this is not as easy as it sounds as one cannot guarantee seats on a particular flight on a particular day unless it’s booked in advance.
The plan had been to arrange a contingency trip with a company like Star Alliance who have links with airlines across the globe in case I missed connections between countries.
A much better solution might be to be in constant contact with Thomas Cook and/or other travel agents throughout the trip so that flight cancellations and delays can be accommodated as quickly as possible.
Look out for more travel updates and 7 Wonders in 7 Days participatory fun next week!
Have a fab bank holiday.
