The second Get Fit Run for 7 Wonders in 7 Days is on this Saturday 13th March at the indoor running track at Manchester Regional Athletics Arena, Sportcity from 2pm to 4pm.

A couple of us are using the runs as a way of training for marathons including the Great Manchester Run in May so even though this is rather late shout out, we’d like to extend an invitation to anyone training for any long distance charity running event.

Note that as someone else has hired out the venue for something else (athletics-related!), everyone taking part in the Get Fit Run has to pay £3.50 to register with the reception at Manchester Regional Athletics Arena to use the facilities before joining us on the indoor running track on Saturday.

I have to do the same.

Though we were training in the warm environs of Sportcity’s 200m indoor running track, the first mile wasn’t easy… I thought it would be a walk in the park having done regular training for playing football on the women’s team as a student at York University many moons ago but it was hard!

I’m so thankful I was in the company of some experienced runners, I learnt about picking a steady pace and thinking about my breathing.

Here’s a 2:40 minute video of what we got up to.  In the end I did 3 separate miles (or 5km, split over 3 separate runs of approximately 1.5km each, as pointed out by my friend Paula wh0 accompanied me for each).   5km sounds much better!

Thanks so much to Sarah, Paula, Susannah, Gill and Serena who joined me.  We had so much fun we’re planning to do it again in a fortnight. I’ll put sign up details of that later in the week; you’re welcome to join us.

It’s worth mentioning we had a surprise guest in an 11 year old Sale Harriers athlete who was there waiting for her sister who was in a pole vault training session. She joined in and lapped me and my friends at least twice!

I think she did a mile in 5-6 minutes, she was really quick. I can’t name her directly as I didn’t ask her permission but if she’s reading this: “Well done, keep it up, you’re very gifted!”

I have to say a big thank you to all the recent donors, so encouraging!!  I have more to say on this in another blog post.

Get Fit for Sport Relief!

I’ve arranged a fortnightly run for Sport Relief 2010 at the indoor running track at the Manchester Regional Arena, the first of which is on Saturday 27th February from 2pm-4pm.   If you live in or around Manchester, you’re welcome to join me. All levels of runner invited – from complete beginner to practised weekly jogger!

We’ll be doing a couple of warm up exercises and ‘practice miles’ ahead of the Manchester Sport Relief Mile in Spinningfields on 21st March.

Craig, founder of pioneering online community network Craigslist, is widely recognised as one of the fiercest proponents of a free internet.

Fitting then that he is part of the Travelling Geeks consortium of high powered US geeks, bloggers and entrepreners touring the country this week as part of Innovation UK.

Yesterday’s event was a belter!  I got to chat to lots of people about 7 Wonders in 7 Days and also managed to interview some very famous web people about the project.  Thank God for my Flip Mino HD camera.  Thing of beauty, that.

I first heard about Robert when he became Microsoft’s first blogger, quite a long time ago.  Since then he has become a web celebrity in his own right and is responsible for launching the careers of many, many now mainstream web start-ups.  Live-video streaming platform Qik, lifestreaming service Friendfeed and microblogging service du jour Twitter are just three of the social media tools he raved about in their early days.

I had a lovely time at the gorgeous Study and Lounge at the Living Room on Deansgate at yesterday’s Charity Auction and Tweetup.

The numbers weren’t what I’d expected, perhaps the less than a month notice was too short for some.  Still, there was a decent turnout on a night when a big digital agency were celebrating their 10th birthday at another venue.

Hope it went well Code! I’m pretty sure it did, liked the sound of those breakdancers.

Just before the start, La Tasca, the Spanish restaurant right next to the Living Room donated a meal for two to the Charity Auction!  Thank you so much La Tasca.

Finally, the Living Room staff were fantastic, both on the night and in the run up to the event.  My heartfelt thanks to Emily, Hayley, Abby and David for all your support in making the Charity Auction and Tweetup a success.

We raised £242 at the end of the night which is fantastic!   It’s a great start.

Peter Gregson’s performances were sublime and I’m looking forward to watching the digitised footage.  The live stream looked great.  I don’t think it is live now however so you’ll have to make do with the first half of a video of Peter’s last song from his last set which I filmed with my Flip Mino HD camera.  Next half up later today.

The best way I can describe Peter’s music is that it is “lovely, ethereal and otherworldly”.  I noted the words ‘calming and inviting’ when I was making notes yesterday.

He does some interesting things with samples and live cello that need to be experienced to be believed.  He ‘played’ along to a very dashing Macbook Air using an electronic cello.  The overall effect was rather like the Living Room: deliciously upmarket yet cool.

I recall he started with Corpus Christi Carol by Benjamin Britten as featured on Jeff Buckley‘s album ‘Grace’.

He also performed two songs from his new album, out next month.

Peter got really involved in the Charity Auction, walking away with the hamper donated by Starbucks and the top prize, the signed copy of children’s novel ‘A Hat Full of Sky’ donated by the author Sir Terry Pratchett OBE.

Peter’s dad actually donated towards the signed copy of A Hat Full of Sky, paying an additional £15 meaning it went for £50, for which I am very grateful.

I know it’s for your brother who is a big Terry Pratchett fan but look after that copy, Peter; it’s a very special piece of Terry Pratchett memorabilia!

Colin Smythe, Sir Terry’s agent and publisher told me it is a publisher’s edition that was signed a few years ago by Sir Terry.  It’s got a very different cover to the copy sold in the shops.  It’s got a story all of its own.

Like I said yesterday, there should be another 7 Wonders in 7 Days event in about a month.  I’m talking to a City centre restaurant who are interested in sponsoring an event.  Will keep you posted.

Also, I hope to be able to share more on the costings for the trip when I’ve spoken with Thomas Cook again.  It’s looking like the trip budget of £7000 may be a lot more than actually needed!  Will definitely keep you posted.

Update: Just spoken to Kathryn Gregory, World Travel expert at Thomas Cook Manchester and she says the trip budget should be £4670 which is welcome news!  The total air miles will be 35189.  This is great as I can now get on with arranging for that to be carbon offset.

I went in to see the manager at Cloud 23, the Skyline Bar in Manchester landmark, Hilton Manchester Deansgate about the Charity Auction yesterday evening, following up on a visit the day before and was blown away when he donated ‘A Night for 2 in Cloud 23’ to the charity auction!

Tampopo is an Oriental mini-restaurant group based in the North West.  According to their website:

There’s a review of the Manchester City Centre restaurant on the Manchester Confidential website.

I ate there last week for the first time and really enjoyed it. Their customer service  was excellent so I decided to ask them to donate to the charity auction!

Yesterday was a whirlwind of activity.  At lunch time I had a meeting with the irrepressible Kathryn Gregory, World Travel expert at Thomas Cook Manchester.

She’s been incredibly thorough with helping plan the 7 Wonders in 7 Days travel itinerary and I’m very grateful for her patience in dealing with all the minute details.

We are not quite there yet with the itinerary; there’ve been a couple of changes to it, mostly due to the fact it is being input onto new systems at Thomas Cook.

I should know where we stand with timings by mid next week.

Our discussions today did lead me to ask for advice on Twitter.   Thomas Cook cannot sort out internal travel arrangements within each destination unless they have an authorised agent there.

This means I will have to find out how to get to the 7 Wonders destinations from the airport in some cases.  It also means I may have to sort out my accommodation in Jordan, something I’ve already started arranging via Twitter.

I posted a question on Twitter about getting to Machu Picchu from Cuzco, both in Peru and Dubai resident, Sarah Hepburn (@Sarah3112 on Twitter),  a fellow 7 Wonders ‘tourist’ replied with some really helpful information.

My question:

How long does it take to get from Cuzco airport to Machu Picchu, both in Peru? Pls state method of transport & duration. Thank you! #90909

Sarah answers:

@7wondersin7days For Machu Picchu, the train from Cuzco is about 4hrs to Aguas Calientes, then bus from Aguas Calientes up the 8km to MP.

It’s looking like we need to allow for an additional 4 hours at least on that leg of the journey and this might make things difficult for squeezing the 7 destinations into 7 days.

It’s still very much possible though as by this stage I’ll only have one more destination to see, Chichen Itza in Mexico, according to our itinerary so far.

Sarah also tweeted some useful info on watching out for altitude sickness in Machu Picchu:

@7wondersin7days Machu Picchu lies @ about 2500m above sea-level & it’s likely 2b affected by alt sick from 2500m & higher. Small chance tho

I am planning to post the full travel itinerary on here when it’s ready as it still needs tweaks, especially for the internal transport within each of the 7 countries.

I’m also looking forward to being given an estimate of the total air miles for the trip so I can get on with arranging for that to be offset.

I intend to talk to a couple of companies about sponsoring this as suggested by Dan Donald aka @hereinthehive a while back, will keep you posted.

Speaking of Dan, he has spruced up the 7 Wonders in 7 Days MySpace page, something he offered to do as part of Team 7 Wonders.  It’s looking a lot nicer than my first effort.  Thanks again Dan.

I’m also really looking forward to being interviewed by Anna-Louise Gilhooley, editor of WorkLife, Manchester’s first business and lifestyle magazine at the charity auction later today.

WorkLife is a bi-monthly, free title distributed across Manchester City Centre, including hot spots and exclusive venues, boutique hotels and high end apartment blocks. The magazine has two halves, business, and lifestyle with two corresponding front covers.

The magazine will be featuring me in the August/September issue, out in August.

I’m so thrilled to be announcing this!

Sir Terry Pratchett OBE has sent me a signed book for the 7 Wonders in 7 Days Charity Auction and Tweetup on Thursday!

Sir Terry Pratchett has sold over 65 million books worldwide and is best known for his popular and long-running Discworld series of comic fantasy novels.

As he says in this 5 minute video interview on the BBC in February, he is very proud of his children’s stories, one of which is A Hat Full of Sky.

I wrote to Sir Terry’s agent requesting a signed book for the auction and am still blown over by the fact that he sent one!

I have right next to me a copy of A Hat Full of Sky with Sir Terry Pratchett’s signature on the title page reserved for the lucky person who bids for it at the charity auction at The Living Room, Deansgate, Manchester on Thursday!

For quite a while, I’ve wanted to write about why I’m supporting the 7 charities I have picked.

Alzheimer’s Research Trust was the first charity I picked because the 7 Wonders in 7 Days trip was inspired by my grandmother’s death aged 83 from complications arising from Alzheimer’s Disease.

You can read more about how a TV programme featuring a man caring for his elderly wife suffering from the disease set me off on this incredible journey.

When researching Alzheimer charities I was surprised and saddened to read that Sir Terry had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2007.  You can watch his public announcement on the BBC here.  You can also read it here.   Sir Terry Pratchett is patron of Alzheimer’s Research Trust.

I’ve long been an admirer of his work; I’ve never forgotten reading the line about “writing being the most fun thing a person can do on their own with their clothes on” {paraphrased} from the Acknowledgements page in a friend’s copy of one of the Discworld novels.

Discovering that he was patron of the only charity dedicated to researching a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias swung it my way.  I had been considering supporting the Alzheimer’s Society.

I am eternally grateful to Sir Terry Pratchett for his kindness in donating a signed book to the 7 Wonders in 7 Days charity auction and will keep praying for him and his family.  I have some experience of what they are going through.

This week has been blessed with lots of good news about 7 Wonders in 7 Days.

The latest is that award winning cellist and pioneer of contemporary music, Peter Gregson’s performance at the Charity Auction and Tweetup at the Living Room on Deansgate on 25th June will be live streamed on the internet by none other than Josh R aka @technicalfault, Digital Producer for the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC).

Josh oversaw the live streaming of Trevor Phillips, Chair of the Commission’s keynote lecture at the Race in Britain conference earlier in the year.   I’m thrilled that he has agreed to live stream Peter’s performance and know it will open the event to a much wider web audience.

The live stream will really complement the Twitter back channel being organised for the event by Julian Tait aka julianlstar.

Josh is one of the latest members of Team 7 Wonders. Welcome aboard Josh!

Student blogger extraordinaire Ricky Chotai aka @ricky_chotai is another.  Ricky has written for the respected Mobile Industry Review.  He will blogging about the 7 Wonders in 7 Days campaign, both on 7wondersin7days.com and on top mobile blog, The Really Mobile Project.

Louise Bolotin, @louisebolotin, the writer and blogger behind the successful TwitterTitters campaign will also be blogging about the project and is another new member.

As far as the PR and press campaign for the campaign is concerned, I’m pleased to announce that Katie Moffat, @katiemoffat, the freelance PR and communications specialist behind Manchester Twestival is also part of the team.

Katie is probably the only other person in Manchester with experience in organising a large, social media powered charity campaign and I’m really grateful for all the support she has given the 7 Wonders in 7 Days project since the very start.

Next week should see more exciting news about the project.  There’s a clutch of videos featuring live music and interviews from the first 7 Wonders in 7 Days musical outing to come.

I’m also approaching some rather special people (read: celebrities) regarding donations for the auction on the 25th.  I’ll keep you posted!
