7 Wonders in 7 Days trip now happens next October on 10/10/10
After careful consideration, I have decided to postpone the 7 Wonders in 7 Days trip to next October, 10/10/10 to be precise, to allow enough time to involve more participants and raise the funds needed to travel.
There is simply not enough time to get everything organised for a successful trip if I were to set off on 9th September as planned.
The reasons are manifold:
- Insufficient time to set up the charity being started by my parents in memory of my late gran, the Jessie Ekweozor Memorial Foundation, one of the 7 charities I am raising funds for through the trip
- Insufficient time to raise the money to go on the trip and take one lucky person along. Amount needed: £14000. Total amount raised so far: £272.
- Insufficient time to share more about the reasons why I’ve chosen to support each of the 7 charities
Try as I may I can’t get everything sorted that needs to be done on my own (and hold down a full time job) in less than six weeks.
With hindsight, choosing an arbitrary date of 9/09/09, less than 3 months after the first charity fund raising event for 7 Wonders in 7 Days was tad over-optimistic.
The good news is that postponing the 7 Wonders in 7 Days trip has opened up opportunities for it to be made into a documentary.
I am currently discussing plans to do this with KEO films, the production company behind Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage series on Channel 4 and the acclaimed Terry Pratchett – Living with Alzheimer’s BBC documentary.
I’m also looking forward to doing more events that highlight the good work being done by the charities I have chosen to support. A number of events bringing together communities from each of the 7 countries being visited are also planned in Manchester. Thanks to Hwa Young Jung (@hwayoung on Twitter) for the great suggestion.
I’m really looking forward to spending more time promoting the innovative 7 Wonders in 7 Days fundraising T-shirt, a specially designed t-shirt featuring signatures of everyone who supports me on the trip.
To mark this important change, and to get around my previous time-sensitive hashtag, the tag for the project is now ‘7w7d’. Please use #7w7d instead of #90909 when tagging tweets about the 7 Wonders in 7 Days trip on Twitter.
It’s just as well I’m changing it, really. Twitter doesn’t seem to like numeric hashtags.
I know to some this change of plan is an about turn. I urge you that it is not.
The reality is that it is unlikely I would have been able to embark on a successful trip if I set off on 9th September as planned.
I’m using this website to share as much as I can about the 7 Wonders in 7 Days project and have tried to be as transparent as possible in all my blog posts.
I’m going to be meeting with Team 7 Wonders and everyone who has sponsored me so far in a couple of weeks in a closed invite Tweetup to thank them all for their support and discuss the next stages of the campaign.
I’ll be sharing what we come up with afterwards, don’t you worry!
As always, your comments, queries and questions welcome.
